This exhibit highlights my career as an illustrator and artist in a timeline with personal selections of art and licensed products. Current pieces include digital, painting, mixed media and monotype printmaking.
Throughout my artistic career it has always been a journey of exploration and expansion. For years, as a student, designer, art director, illustrator and simply as an artist, my objectives always seemed like I was climbing to reach a goal, whether it was to perfect my skills, succeed at commercial assignments, run a solo business and, most importantly, enjoy the time allotted to me on this planet. My aspirations seemed to segue from one desire to the next while moving forward and still using strengths that I had learned in the past.
As an artist it seems like there’s always a bit of discontent and a desire to somehow make something better. There are so many masterful artists from the past and the present that it’s easy to become discouraged. In my mind I try to see the beauty in other art pieces and use it for inspiration in my own work.
Exhibiting my artwork is new for me as I have always been too busy creating art for corporate projects, editorial pieces and licensing to have time to get my work physically out into the world. This exhibit is a selection of pieces from the past 20 years that starts with the ‘Studio Wall’ which is a display of how assignments start with sketches and finished art and then translate to tangible products. Many of my newer pieces are still being licensed along with a large library of past art images.
So as I continue on my artistic path of discovery and creation right now I am taking the time to pause and reflect on the steps that have brought me to this moment.

National Juried Monotype Exhibit
April 19, 2016 § Leave a comment
Monotypes are one of my favorite mediums that capture spontaneity and produce results that are very difficult to control. Currently The Monotype Guild of New England is hosting its Fourth National Juried Monotype/Monoprint Exhibit at the Attleboro Arts Museum in Attleboro, MA thru May 7, 2016. The exhibit was juried by Andrew Stevens, Curator of the Collection of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the Chazen Museum at the University of Wisconsin.
With over 100 prints included in the exhibit it represents a wide range of techniques and styles by contemporary printmakers and artists throughout the United States.
First Place Award goes to Anna Mavromatis, Houston, TX for her monotype entitled She Could Hear the Piano Playing. Several awards and merits were presented to participating printmakers.
One of my favorite pieces in the exhibit is this hybrid print entitled Yotzumata by Koichi Yamamoto from Knoxville, TN. The impressive piece is a very large monotype with Intaglio Chine Colle and received the McClain’s Printmaking Award.
The Monotype Guild of New England is dedicated to the art of the unique print, it is a national, nonprofit organization that fosters understanding and appreciation of monotypes and monoprints. It sponsors exhibitions, workshops, and other special programs for its members and the public.
The Attleboro Arts Museum is located at 86 Park Street in Attleboro, MA. Hours are Tues – Sat, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Standard admission and parking are free. Donations are always appreciated.
Make It Your Own Exhibit
March 4, 2016 § Leave a comment
Thru March 2016 the Coastal Printmakers have a special exhibit at The James Library and Center for the Arts. Printmakers were asked to choose a piece of artwork that inspires them and create a print with their own voice. The monotype that I have selected to be included in the exhibit is entitled Dynasty which was inspired by Cy Twombly.
Cy Twombly is known for his loose painterly marks that at first glance may appear to be naïve but after closer observation the viewer will be awakened to their sophisticated and poetic articulation.
This bookplate by Cy Twombly moved me with his love of paint. The textures and colors evoke a garden in bloom with a pureness and simplistic expression that also has depth and complexity.

Working in the print studio at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA is a weekly exercise that helps to keep me creating artwork on a consistent basis while connecting with other local printmakers. As a Gallery Artist I have been invited to submit a piece for the upcoming Gallery Artist Showcase that opens May 29- June 12, 2015 in the Dillon Gallery. The opening reception is Friday, May 29 from 6 to 8 pm. My submission is the above monotype entitled Pink Garden.

Mixed media painting entitled exposed 72″ x 42″.
It is with great anticipation that I am planning an upcoming exhibit with my artist comrade Patricia Berube at the James Library & Center for the Arts starting on April 3rd thru 29th. The pieces that I am presenting are recent paintings and monotypes that expose a personal side to my work. Interests that come though my artwork are a love of color, texture, scale, paint strokes and a sense of humor. After many years as a commercial illustrator, designer and art director I have taken the time to create pieces that interest me without the restrictions of assignment work.
Monotypes that will be included in the show are a way for my work to be more free with a suggestion of realism that lends itself to the viewer making their own conclusions and stories. Pieces will range in size from large 72′ x 42′ paintings down to smaller 4″x 6″ pieces. Please Join me.

Coastal Printmaker Invitational Exhibit
June 13, 2014 § Leave a comment
It was back in 2007 that Bob and Elaine Cunniff organized the Coastal Printmakers and now our most recent Coastal Printmaker Invitational Exhibit has over 60 original prints all hanging at the South Shore Conservatory in Hingham, MA. This is one of the exhibit spaces managed by the South Shore Art Center.
Within the exhibit are an array of creative and thought provoking pieces. Several of the prints are monotypes which lend themselves to a painterly style that merges abstraction and realism.
While hanging the exhibit I was able to sneak in a couple of shots. These three monotypes by Trish Berube are gorgeously organic with a looseness of texture and incredible details.
Joan Hausrath has included some of her collographs that have a primitive and tribal theme with a skill of printmaking that lends itself to her subject matter. Joan is offering a Collograph and Monoprint Workshop this July at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA. I’m a fan!
These intriguing pieces by Roxane Hynek are mesmerizing and beautiful in their simplicity.
In the downstairs hallway the Coastal Printmakers Exhibit continues with a wall filled with black and white prints by accomplished printmakers Susan Denniston, Michele Meister, Amy Geyer and more.
Thanks to all the Coastal Printmakers, the So. Shore Art Center, the So. Shore Conservatory and all our volunteers that made this exhibit possible. This is a printmaking exhibit not to be missed with several fine art prints that are the efforts of local artists. All of the pieces are originals and available for purchase through the So. Shore Art Center. The best way to appreciate art is to see it in person.
This exhibit runs through September 30th, 2014 and is located at the So. Shore Conservatory at 1 Conservatory Drive in Hingham, MA 02043.
Hours: Monday – Thursday, 9:00 am – 9:00 pm,
Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm,

Footprints in the Garden
May 7, 2014 § 1 Comment
Spring has finally arrived on the South Shore of Massachusetts and Coastal Printmakers are celebrating with a new exhibit entitled Footprints in the Garden on view thru May 28, 2014 at the James Library and Art Center at 24 West Street Norwell, MA. All unique and original prints have a 12″ x 12″ image area (foot prints-get it?) and were created specifically for this themed show that is inspired by nature.
Each piece in the exhibit depicts the character and creativity of the artist such as the above monotype by Anita Franks who is inspired by artists such as Authur Dove and Wassily Kandinsky. Although this piece is abstract it suggests nature from the smallest life force of a single cell to the vibrancy and power of the sun.
Esther Maschio is the printmaker who is the driving force behind Coastal Printmakers. She has taught printmaking at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA for 20+ years and continues to inspire and encourage artists of all skill levels. Her studio classes are consistently popular with many of her students attending year after year.
Jane Johnston is a collagraph expert. She uses a variety of materials to construct her prints that range from fabrics to fragments of drywall tape to just about anything she can get her hands on. Her pieces are thoughtfully constructed and are a balance of mechanical genius and organic madness.
The Footprints in the Garden exhibit will continue thru May 28th and will be part of the Books in Bloom fundraiser that takes place this Friday, May 9th, at the James Library and Art Center. Three floors of spectacular floral displays interpreting books, light fare, cash bar, light music and more.
Looking for a fun Mother’s Day outing this weekend? Bring Mom to the Books in Bloom Open House this Saturday, May 10th, from 10 -1 p.m. Stop by and enjoy three floors of 25 spectacular floral displays depicting books. Details at www.jameslibrary.org. Free.
Synergies: New Gallery Artists Expo
January 5, 2014 § Leave a comment
Recently I’ve been working a series of monotypes that will be included in the Synergies: New Gallery Artists Expo that opens on January 10th and runs thru February 9th, 2014. Eight of my pieces are included in this exhibit that features five new Gallery Artists in the Dillon Gallery at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA. This exhibit runs in conjunction with the ‘Made in America’ Gallery Artists Juried Exhibit in the Bancroft Gallery.
The series is a recent snapshot of my interest in the natural beauty of color, texture, scale and spontaneity. Each print is unique and one-of-a-kind, which is inherent in monotype printmaking. The process begins by choosing a plexiglass plate whereby mediums are applied, built up, and then removed until the image is to my liking. My interest in working with inks, and how they can be manipulated, is fascinating and challenging both creatively and technically. I also create templates made from various materials ranging from plastic cutting boards to pieces of fabric and found materials that impart texture into the print. While working, I may have a story in mind. Sometimes it evolves as I work with the materials, similar to a musician that warms up to find a groove, thereby creating the unexpected while following the intuition of the moment.
Abstract ideas are incorporated with a touch of realism—ancient forms fused with modernism. Scale is another aspect of my work that intrigues me. In this series there are larger pieces along with smaller ones. Within the compositions there are elements that are both large and small creating altered perspectives. Once I am satisfied with the composition a sheet of Arches 88 paper is placed over the plate and is run through a hand press. The pressure from the roller transfers the image onto the paper. The monotype process allows for a looseness with unexpected results that add character and unusual details to the finished print. The final pieces give enough information to bring the viewer to the threshold of their own interpretations.
Please visit this exhibit that has it’s opening reception on January 10th from 6 to 8 pm. The South Shore Art Center operates Monday–Saturday 10–4, Sunday 12–4.
